A New Chapter for Sparrow Soaps: Taking Leap of Faith

If there is one thing I’ve learned about owning a small business, it’s that the path is almost never straight. There are twists and turns, doors that open, doors that close, people who come into your life for a season, plans that work beautifully and plenty that absolutely do not. Somewhere in the middle of all of it, you learn to take the next step even when you can’t quite see where you’re going.

Sparrow Soaps has certainly had its share of chapters. What began with Sue and Michelle making soap grew into something none of us could have completely imagined at the time. Eventually, Michelle and I took another leap and opened our first storefront. Over the years, Sparrow grew from simply making really good soap into this little community that I have come to love more than I can put into words. And now, we’re turning another page. As of this summer, I became the sole owner of Sparrow Soaps. Even typing that still feels a little strange.

This wasn’t necessarily the chapter I saw coming, and stepping into all of Sparrow has been equal parts exciting, terrifying, humbling and, occasionally, “Wait… I’m in charge of that too?” Turns out being the sole owner means you are the soap maker, lotion maker, order packer, inventory manager, buyer, marketer, social media person, window washer recruiter (thanks, Dave), customer service department and the person Googling how to fix whatever decided to stop working that day.

But underneath all of that has been something much bigger: faith. I’ve had to remind myself that taking a leap of faith doesn’t mean you know exactly where you’re going to land. Sometimes it simply means taking the next step and trusting God with the part you can’t see yet. And that’s where I am. I don’t have some grand five-year plan for what Sparrow is supposed to become. I have ideas, probably too many of them if you ask my husband, but more than anything, I know what I want Sparrow to feel like.

I want you to walk through our door and feel welcome. I want to keep creating things with my hands and praying over the batches we make. I want this business to give back to the community that has supported it. I want to spread kindness, make people smile, encourage someone who might need it that day and hopefully remind people that they are loved. Because somewhere along the way, I realized something: Sparrow Soaps has never really been just about soap. The soap is just how it all started.

“More Than Just Soap” isn’t simply a tagline to me. It’s what I hope Sparrow continues to become. A small business with a big heart. A place where faith, kindness, community and really good goat milk soap can somehow all exist under one little roof. I’m incredibly grateful for the women who helped build Sparrow before me and beside me. Their fingerprints will always be part of this story. And I’m equally grateful for every person who has walked through our doors, placed an online order, told a friend about us, shared a post, attended an event or simply stopped in to say hello. You are the reason a little soap business gets to keep having another chapter.

So yes, Sparrow looks a little different these days. There’s one owner, a whole lot of hats being worn and plenty I’m still figuring out. But the heart of Sparrow hasn’t changed. I don’t know exactly where this next chapter will lead, and for once, maybe I don’t need to. I’ll take the next step, trust God with the rest and keep showing up. And wherever Sparrow goes from here, I hope you’ll come along for the ride.
